To say I grew up Catholic would be a gross understatement. It was as much a part of who I was as were my eyes, my ears, or even my big Lebanese nose. I was as involved as a person could be: enthusiastically attending CCD, and singing in the folk group. So when I was rejected by the Catholic Church for coming out and being my authentic self time and time again I was devastated, to say the least. As an adult, I searched for a spiritual home. I had been anticipating the happiness I would feel when I finally found one, & although I eventually settled in a huge Lutheran Church in Baltimore, I still felt like something was missing. Then I walked into Joy Reigns for the first time and I experienced pure joy. The community at Joy Reigns, and more specifically the band, encouraged me to grow in my faith and I found myself falling more and more in love with God instead of being a blindfold follower. They have supported me when I was at my best and my lowest. They helped me grow so much that when my wife and I decided to become foster parents it wasn’t just something we did because we were good people. I knew in my heart that it was God calling for us. Moms and Dads (often with babies in tow) come each month to receive a weeks' supply of diapers and wipes. We often have heard the recurring question... ?What's the cost? ¿Precio? When we tell the family that there is no cost, we often get an emotional response. One Mom told me that the "gift" of diapers from Joy Reigns, as well as the Thrift Shop, has made it possible for and her child to survive. This actually has been able to give them the ability to buy food and other necessities for the month. This was not a "only happens once" conversation, the recipients of the Baby Pantry items are truly grateful for the blessings we have been able to provide. No matter an individual’s background, beliefs, or burdens, Joy Reigns opens its doors and provides a place for people to be themselves. Joy Reigns knows that Kat and I are two parents with full time jobs, blessed with two young, rambunctious little ones with demands which keep us apart from the more engaged part of the church community. Joy Reigns loves us anyway and is always happy to see us, not keeping us at arms length, or placing designations on us, but loving us whenever they get the opportunity. The baby pantry is in the same category as helping widows and orphans in my opinion. I can’t imagine the thought of children being so disadvantaged that they sit in their own filth. It pains me. So monthly we do this important work, to help local families. This is my favorite way of trying to follow what Christ called the second greatest commandment. This three year faith journey is a work at your own pace program with many different learning experiences. Some of the options are: paint a parable, watch a video, try a new prayer type, field trip to Bible Museum, in person class with PSY, talk and learn, visit council meeting, volunteer at Joy Thrift/Baby Pantry/Food Ministry, memorize parts of the Small Catechism, or create your own. God’s table is open to all. Just like God’s grace is open to all , no restrictions. Usually as young as a baby or toddler, children recognize that something is happening in the community during the distribution of Holy Communion that they want to be part of. They will reach for the bread or notice their parent drinking the wine or grape juice. That means they are ready! Children often learn through tactile ways, making touching and tasting the communion elements a great way to learn about God’s love. Classes are offered periodically throughout the year to help those interested to learn about communion in age appropriate ways. Three typical times for learning opportunities are a class for parents and children around the age of 6-8. Again in Confirmation ages 12-14 youth are taught a deeper understanding. This helps us know how many people were in worship and connect with newcomers. After that, please help yourself to refreshments from the back table, and then sit anywhere you like. At Joy Reigns, we are more concerned with letting the Holy Spirit work inside us than we are with outside appearances! There is no dress code: from loungewear to jeans to business casual, you’ll see that everyone wears whatever makes them most comfortable. Some love to clap or raise their hands to the worship music, while others prefer to just listen. Children are warmly invited to sit with their families if they choose - we know their wiggles are holy and good! We also have a “prayground” area and a nursery for those who prefer. We ask caregivers to accompany their children to these areas. We have many options for those onsite who want to participate in leading the service. Communion servers prepare and help distribute this holy meal. They also greet people as they arrive. Worship leaders share announcements, read the day’s Scripture lessons, lead the prayers, and help serve Communion. Counters work together after the service to count the offerings received that day. The praise band leads the congregation in worshiping God through song. If you’d like to participate in worship, please ask any one in the congregation - we can all point you in the right direction!
